Sir, I want to start preparation for IAS so plz suggest me any institute in Delhi where I can join to start my preparation. I have no ideas about any institute over their.

You should decide first which area need guidance. You have many good institutes for General Studies and optional subjects that render guidance in Delhi. The environment is new and you need to be careful in coaching institute’s selection as the pattern and syllabus for General Studies has just been changed. It is better to commence preparation of your own and make a solid foundation. This will help in making better use of study at coaching institutes. For General Studies, if you are thinking about joining coaching institute, you can consider anyone among Vajiram & Ravi, Sriram’s IAS or may be ALS.... Read More

sir i m in last year of b.com and i want to select two subjects which are optional in two last papers of csat respectively; management and psycology so can i select these subjects?

In new format for Main Examination, you need to look for only one optional subject; so, the choice of optional subjects should be made with care. Both, Psychology and Management are very good optional subjects; but, before optional subject selection, self-analysis is must and the selection for the most effective optional subject can be made gradually while preparing for General Studies. You have sufficient time to decide about the optional subject; let some trend emerge as by ...... Read More

i am a commerce student and want to appear in 2014 civil services examination. should i read agriculture as optional subject. the list of books are confusing. pl suggest best books in the market. thank you.

Agriculture is a good subject and has come in limelight as Stuti Charan (AIR 3, CSE 2012) has produced outstanding result that too without having subject background. In newer environment where you need to pick only one optional subject, we would not suggest you to go for such decision. It is better to look at the optional subjects that match your own academics.  We would advise you to go fo...... Read More

Sir I appeared for mains 2012 but didnt qualify. plz tell me when the marks of such candidates will be declared

It is a tough examination and chances of success are low; marks will be out soon; but, we suggest not to give too much of importance to the unpleasant result of CSE 2012. Instead, look at the requirements relating to your next attempt. As such, the format for Main Examination has just been revamped. It would be of limited use to look at the marks secured in last attempt as the new environment call for fresh strategies.... Read More

i want to prepare for ias 2014,kindly advice me how to prepare,i am unable to attend coaching classes, please guide me,i have done MBA in finance, like to opt public admin and sociology.i need your guidence

Coaching is not a must; if you are able to understand the exam-related intricacies, you can do it with self-help. As per the new format for Main Examination, you need to pick only one optional subject, so, you may look at either of two. Both Public Administration and Sociology are very good subjects and can be considered as optional subject. The environment is new and to tackle new format, you need to formulate new strategies. Self- analysis is must in the beginning and for optional subject’s selection, can need to be careful. You can also look at Management subject as this has been in focus in recent years and a lot of successes have come in eyes.... Read More

Sir, I'm a mass-communication and journalism student, and i've just graduated from Punjab Technical University. I want to appear for Civil Services Examination 2014. I took up humanities as my subject in 11th and 12th so i just want to know which are the best optional subjects for a humanities student?

It is difficult to pin-point which optional subject is the best. Moreover, the format for Main Examination has just been changed that requires a fresh look at the needs and requires new strategies for preparation. Among humanities subjects, Political Science & International Relations, History, Sociology, Public Administration etc. are good subject and have some overlap with General Studies syllabus. It is better to zero-in on 2-3 subjects and then by having a look at the s...... Read More

respected sir, with immense role of gs in mains is that possible that a student can crack the exam without coaching for the same ?

In new format, the increase in role for General Studies does not mean that coaching has become mandatory. The syllabus for General Studies has been defined well and with care if you are able to choose the relevant study material, you will be able to do justice with self-help. While preparing you should remain concerned about the trusted source and updated material as the examination is no ordinary examination and UPSC’s dynamic approach and innovative mode requires a well-planned effort.... RESPECTED SIR, KINDLY GUIDE ME ABOUT THE SELECTION OF OPTIONAL SUBJECTS--WHETHER GEOGRAPHY AND PHILOSOPHY KINDLY PROVIDE ME THE VALUABLE ASPECTS REGARDING THE BOTH THE OPTIONALS

Both Geography and Philosophy are very good optional subject and has been attracting a lot of candidates. Although, in new format for Main Examination, both render some help in General Studies papers, however, balance would tilt in favour of Geography. Like any other subject, Geography also has some specific requirements which you need to understand before you pick it as one optional subject. Geography is a semi-scientific subject and multi-dimensional in...... Read More
