Sir, im an IPS aspirant. im currently doing my masters and the course gets over in june 2012. I've already started preparing for CSE 2012 prelims and im confident of clearing it. Although im not very confident of clearing the mains since ill have very limited time for preparation after my M.Sc exams get over. But i want to try for the sake of experience. Is it worth wasting an attempt or should i wait for CSE 2013?? Please enlighten me.

A degree from any recognized university is minimum qualification for appearing in Civil Services Examination. It depends on you how much interest you have in the subjects you have shortlisted. Generally, engineering background candidates perform well with Geography as second optional subject. Both Sociology and Philosophy are among most popular optionals and are good scoring subjects. In Hindi, Philosophy result is not that encouraging for CSE 2010. The new-look prelims requires you to learn new skills and linguistic skills are one of them. We have CSE 2011 Prelims Paper which reflects that you require some basic preparation. Even the syllabus suggests level of X standard. Preparation for English can be done with help of any good grammer book available in market and books on comprehension. A good dictionary is a must. You have almost 19 months in hand and can devote some time learning these skills right now so that later you can concentrate on your Main Examiantion related requirements. Well, these apprehensions about the proposed changes at Main Examiantion level are troubling many candidates. We have been flooded with such queries but as far as changes in Civil Services Examination 2012 is concerned, we are still to hear from UPSC or Government about such plans. Public Administration is a subject which is considered immune to whatever happens in future in relation to changes at Main Examiantion level.
