Geography is a very good optional subject and a lot of candidates from engineering background prefer it just because of semi-scientific nature of the subject.
Moreover, when you have interest in Geography, there should not be any reason to look at any other alternative. With little efforts, you can prepare it effectively and its importance will be felt when you will come across Geography constituent while preparing General Studies for Preliminary as well as Main Examination.
It is difficult to say why you lost interest; may be the choice of books was not correct or you may not be attentive while reading.
Also, in the first read, anyone can be easily confused as the concentration is not that great. It is suggested that a second read help you to understand it better and you are able to retain it for a longer time.
We suggest you to read NCERT book of 8-10th standard first and then commence preparation with Physical Geography portion of the syllabus.It is easy to understand and lot of stuff is of general wareness.
Preferably, look for a book that pictorially depicts the content with lots of illustrations and images.
