Success in Civil Services Examination is a dream for many; but, majority of candidates look at the “odds of being successful” and this becomes the most crucial factor why several otherwise talented candidates desert their dreams of foray in to Civil Services Examination.

It is all about you and how you visualize your endeavour.

I believe there are three broad categories in which Civil Services Examination aspirants can be segregated.

In past more than 3 decades, I have met thousands of successful candidates in Civil Services Examination and out of these successful candidates interviewed by me would be crossing four digit figure.

I have met as many unsuccessful candidates and numerous aspirants preparing for Civil Services Examination with a dream to make career in ‘Civil Services’.

It has been really satisfying as well enriching journey and I keep on getting lots of insights as well as clues about the strategies candidates make to counter evolving challenges they face while preparing for Civil Services Examination.

During these years, I have witnessed many changes in the exam-plan, change in the mind-set of aspirants and the way preparation style has transformed.

My broad observation has been that myths and wrong notions that surround this examination and the biggest factor that makes it look tough and challenging is big number of applicants and chances of success minimal. This factor alone sends signal that is wide off the mark. As a result, many otherwise talented youngsters surrender even without trying and give a new direction to their career-orientation by opting a different field.

Among those who show courage to appear in Civil Services Examination the competition is not as tough as it appears. While majority of non-serious candidates make crowd; there are many who are not clear about the goal and only a few thousand candidates serious about their endeavour and the real competition is among them only.

I am making an attempt of segregate Civil Services Examination aspirants in to three broad categories that I believe ultimately define their chances of success in such a gruelling competition.

First:

Imagining a future in prestigious ‘Civil Services’ some of the candidates follow their dreams half-heartedly.

Without a proper plan they just spend time and unsure of their career choice, they just try to emulate others.

Candidates entering this arena on some compulsion; probably to fulfil wishes of parents, or just to show others or may be under any force feel Civil Services Examination a burden only.

They keep on reasoning themselves everyday “Can I possibly succeed in Civil Services Examination or is it I am chasing someone else’s dream?”

What baffles me the most is for each wrong choice or step; they have many arguments in support that impedes ability to move forward.

Making such important decisions about career on the basis of inadequate information about the task in hand makes it difficult to handle effectively.

More than anything else, it is their lacklustre attitude that perpetually predicts the negative outcome.

Most of the candidates having such view apply for Civil Services Examination every year and majority of them just make this ‘Civil services Exam’ arena a crowded place and as a result this examination seems much bigger than its size.

Second:

Then, comes a grouping of candidates who prepare for Civil Services Examination in such a way that as if they have template for success.

Being sure that they have the true dreams and it seems manageable; but, they are governed by “words of the wise” and just follow the successful candidates’ strategies blindly or may be track information flowing from Coaching institutes

It is commonly heard, “By putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, you can have more empathy.”

Unsure of whether they are making the right decision; still, keep moving forward.

These types of candidates continually remain motivated, hunt for new experiences and their actions in right direction bear fruits.

With consistence in preparation, they keep learning about the world around and sooner or later, find the way to destination.

Third:

Midst of them, there are some candidates who augment their “odds of success” before the encounter even begins and lays a solid foundation.

Be clear that these are the candidates who are seriously in the race and throw up real competition.

They understand the exam-plan, the intricacies involved and are always in learners’ shoes. They are ready to learn and even unlearn; their adaptive approach make it manageable and an efficacious preparation as well as effectual performance help them in their accomplishment.

They have a clear view about the final outcome and relentlessly prepare and keep moving forward thus enhance prospects of a dazzling ending.

In between ups and downs, some mistakes are bound to happen; but, such candidates acknowledge such occurrences as a learning opportunity and prevail such testing times with positive frame of mind.

It is not that they are not bombarded with myths, wrong notions and scepticism that surround this examination; but, their outlook and attitude helps them overcome all these pessimistic views and opinions and they are out to write their own destiny.

Before you move forward, spare some time to relate and locate which of these categories you belong to.

How many of you are serious about your endeavour and aim to achieve success in Civil Services Examination in first attempt?

If you connect with third type of candidates, you are on the right path. Most of the candidates who make it to the list in their first attempt and most of the candidates securing top ranks belong to this club.

If you correlate your preparation with second type of candidates, you need a little push and a serious thought about your endeavour, time, money and effort you are putting in. you have dreams, will to perform; all you need is making some smart moves and soon, you will find your rhythm.

Somehow you establish link with first type of candidates, don’t lose heart.

You need motivation to perform and by considering the end rewards this exam offers, you can draw some inspiration.

Remember, your success will not only change your life and lives of your parent’s, family and your close ones, it will inspire thousands of others to perform and excel in life.
